We are what we eat. How to detox your skin by looking after it from the inside out.

 

I have written plenty of blogs about how to use makeup to create great looking skin but I think it’s really important for us to remember that great skin is the most important factor when wanting perfect makeup. Wouldn’t it be great to not have to wear makeup and still have great looking skin! That’s why I am sharing my tips to do a skin detox so you can improve your skin from the inside out because ultimately we are what we eat.

Detox Your Body

To improve your overall health and the appearance of your skin do a detox. This will help to detox your liver, bowel and kidneys to eliminate toxins that build up in the body, whilst  improving their overall performance. You may be thinking; “what on earth do my organs have to do with my skin?” Well the skin is our bodies biggest organ and the outside of your body really does reflect what is happening within it. A detox for the skin does not need to be as extreme as excluding all of your favourite foods but I do suggest cutting down on red meat, alcohol and sugar as much as possible. Don’t worry, you don’t have to go to the extreme all the time, my favourite way to detox is to drink a glass of warm water mixed with fresh lemon juice, first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. The nutritional and antioxidant effects of lemon actually double when consumed with warm water. Plus, it is delicious and refreshing!

Drink plenty of water

I know you’ve heard it before but your skin really will thank you if you drink 3 litres of water per day. Skin cells, like all of our cells are made up of water and we need to keep the cells healthy by ensuring we drink plenty of water. If your skin does not get enough water everyday then your skin will appear dull and dry and it may even start flaking. Did you know dry skin causes wrinkles? Need I say more! Drinking plenty of water does not mean that you can skip the moisturiser altogether though as most of the water we drink will be used by all the other organs before it reaches the skin.

We are what we eat!

Drink green tea to help reduce redness in your skin as it fights inflammation and is very high in antioxidants. Now personally I am not a fan of green tea as I find it a bit bland so I found a delicious tea that is great for your skin, Yogi Skin Detox Tea.

Eat plenty of cooked tomatoes or tomato paste everyday. The antioxidant lycopene improves skin’s natural SPF.

Consume plenty of olive oil and fish to keep your essential fatty acid levels up. This will help keep your skin clear and strong.

Eat plenty of berries.

Have a serve of Greek yoghurt a day. it is full of protein that will help your skin appear smoother if you eat a tablespoon a day. Protein is the building block of collagen and elastin tissue, which helps the skin stay youthful.

Load up on kiwi. If you don’t like taking tablets every day but you still want the benefits of Vitamin C then have 1 kiwi a day. I said it earlier but I will see it again Vitamin C

Become a hipster like me and drink almond milk, not dairy.  I have suffered from pimples on my back most of my life and recently thanks to the advice of my personal trainer I gave up cow’s milk in favour of almond milk.  Instantly I stopped feeling bloated and getting pimples. Cow’s milk is highly inflammatory, which means it can aggravate acne, wrinkles, and rashes. Now not everyone is intolerant to milk like me but I still want to mention almond milk because switching to it made the biggest improvement to my skin.

Vitamin It Up!

Consuming adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals are an essential part of any healthy, balanced diet. However, Vitamin C is particularly important to achieve a bright, glowing and even complexion. When incorporating this powerhouse ingredient as part of your daily routine, vitamin C delivers a variety of benefits such as improving hydration, keeping skin looking younger, evening skin tone, protecting skin from contamination, pollution, and even the damaging effects of the sun. As an added benefit I like to take the skin, hair and nails all in one supplement as not only does it include the all important vitamin C but it also includes bonus vitamins such as silica, magnesium and zinc which will help to strengthen the skin.

Include Fish Oil Tablets

Fish oil tablets are especially great for your skin as it helps to ward off wrinkles and improve complexion. The essential fatty acids in fish oil play a huge role in the reduction of inflammation in our skin, helping to reduce acne and blemishes. Furthermore, the omega-3’s in fish oil mirror the natural oils that are found within our own bodies, which helps to keep them balanced and maintained. Alternatively you could eat fresh Atlantic Salmon every day but I tried the famous “facelift in the fridge” Dr Perricone Salmon diet and it got boring very quickly so I find it much easier to take fish oil tablets instead!
