So I was lucky enough to travel to Nusa Dua, Bali earlier this year for Nicole and Dean’s destination wedding. It was such a beautiful wedding and I was honoured to be there. They are such a down to earth, fun loving couple with a real sense of adventure so I am sure you will enjoy reading about their day and pouring over the stunning photos captured by the talented Kate Green. Being there brought back some wonderful memories for me as I got married in Bali two years earlier.
On a quick side note if you are planning a destination wedding I am available for travel. I have travelled to Bali, Italy and Byron Bay for destination weddings and I also got married overseas so I offer valuable experience as well as great makeup!
How did you both meet?
Dean and I are high school sweethearts. Dean was in the year above me at school and we had mutual friends. He ‘officially’ asked me to be his girlfriend not long after I graduated high school.
How did he propose?
8 loved-up years later Dean proposed to me on a canoe in Barcelona. Even though we always planned on starting a family together, the proposal was a complete (Lovely) surprise and of course, I said yes straight away. The proposal was our exciting secret for three weeks while we travelled the rest of Spain.
We LOVE to travel and thought it was a great idea to gather up all our friends and family, escape the winter cold and celebrate our wedding by the ocean. We definitely wanted an outdoors wedding and something beautiful, but not over the top. Bali ticked all the boxes and was not too far for our grandparents to travel.
Our wedding didn’t follow many of the more common traditions. The ceremony and the reception were both outside and it was such a liberating feeling to dance with our feet in the sand. We enjoyed an eight-course dinner with the speeches divided throughout the night. The ceremony was very short and to the point, which allowed us more time for the fun parts.
Tell me about the style of your dress, your hair and your makeup. What was your theme for the day?
My dress was from Helen English, our Winona bridesmaid dresses and our wedding was all white so the gold dress was a beautiful contrast. I borrowed the clutch from my mother in law, it was her grandmothers and the Tiffany bangle was borrowed from my mum.
The theme for the day was of course the beautiful destination and so I kept the theme white so it wouldn’t overpower the beautiful surroundings. I loved that it was crisp, clean and simple. I also didn’t want a colour that I would back in 20 years and regret.
I remember when I was getting you ready there was a mad hunt to find sprinklers in Bali, did you find them in the end?
Yes thankfully we did. I originally wanted the sparklers to just have a play around and maybe get some fun photos, and in the end they created such a fun send off!
Who made up your ridiculously photogenic bridal party!?
It was my friends Laura, Jess, Sally, Sarah and Deans sister Andrea. On Dean’s side he had his two brothers Jay and Ben and three friends Michael, Josh and Daniel.
Tell us about your makeup and why you chose Gemma.
There aren’t really many local makeup artists in Bali, and the local style is very made up compared to my more natural style. Luckily Gemma was recommended to me by another make-up artist, I was very impressed that Gemma was willing to travel to Bali to do the make-up for a bride, 5 bridesmaids and 2 mothers of the bride. I wanted my makeup to be special but still very soft as I don’t often wear much so in the end we kept my skin very soft but matte due to the climate and we played up my eyes a little with shades of gold and earthy brown. The most important thing was that it would last through the Bali humidity, which of course it did. Gemma lent me a pressed powder but I didn’t need to touch it once!
Any favourite wedding suppliers you’d like to mention?
We were married at the Westin Resort Nusa Dua and they took care of ABSOLUTELY everything. I sent them photographs of flowers, cakes and decorations and they made it all happen. It was better than I ever expected it to be.
I was extremely happy with my Helen English Dress and Veil, and I thought the bridesmaids looked stunning in their white Winona Dresses.
My Photographer Kate Green was AMAZING! Dean and I are not very photogenic but she was still able to hand us over hundreds of fabulous shots.
