How to wear red lipstick – the makeup trend that is here to stay

Red lips are so hot right now and to be honest they always will be. The goods news is the look is so simple to create. Here are my tips to rocking the red lip

How to wear red lipstick-makeup tips by Gemma Nichols

Wear foundation – you need to create a flawless makeup base to even out skin tone and create the polished look.

Wear a little blush – I like to use a golden toned blush when wearing red lipstick. Nars Luster blush is the prefect blush to compliment any red.

Keep eye makeup minimal – the look should be all about the lips. This is great news as it saves you time. Just apply a cream colour shadow to even out any discolouration on the eyelids, lots of mascara to define the eyes and fill in your brows to create the ultimate polished, 50’s inspired look.

Play around with different tones of red to see which works for you. Here is a list of my favourite reds:

Hourglass Icon – a classic blue based red, a beautiful contrast if you have warm, yellow skin. This is the lipstick I used to create the image above.

Nars lip matte pencil in Pop Life – a neutral red that is perfect for a day to day summer look as it isn’t too strong

Mac Russian Red – another popular classic

Nars Heatwave – an orange based red, looks great on blondes, enhances green eyes

Mac Mineralise Rich Lipstick in Lush Life – a berry toned red, looks great on darker skin tones, is popular for the winter months

Chanel Rouge Allure Lipstick in Pirate – such a beautiful texture, a pleasure to wear

MY PRO TIP – wear a matching lip liner underneath and use a lip brush to help you perfect the shape and keep the colour in place.

Now remember every woman is born to wear red lipstick you just have to experiment to find the shade that works for you. It can be a shock seeing yourself in such a bold colour for the first time so try a sheer red lipstick or a gloss to help get you used to the new look.
